The annual Charles Hamner Award, now in fifth year, recognizes exemplary vision and leadership in biotechnology. For more than 20 years, Dennis Dougherty has been a driving force behind North Carolina’s life science and venture capital communities. Dougherty founded Intersouth Partners in 1985 and continues to lead the life science investment team in the firm’s recently closed $275 million seventh fund. He has served on dozens of boards of directors for both private and public companies and is known for his experienced insight, consensus building and syndicate leadership. A recognized face within the venture industry, Dougherty serves on the board of directors for the National Venture Capital Association, where he also chairs the Education Committee. He was on the Steering Committee for the Kauffman Fellows Program and helped to found the Council for Entrepreneurial Development. In 2005, Dougherty was named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for the Carolinas for the founding and successful growth of Intersouth Partners.
