HyperBranch Medical Technology, Inc.

Raleigh-based HyperBranch Medical Technology, Inc., founded in 2003, is an ophthalmic medical device company focused on developing novel medical devices for ocular surgery based on its proprietary dendrimer polymer technology licensed from Duke University. HyperBranch is focused on two ocular surgery products utilizing its technology: an ocular sealant which will provide a faster, safer way for eye surgeons to close ocular incisions and prevent serious eye infections; and a novel synthetic lens which will more closely mimic the natural functioning of the human lens and help restore vision for cataract surgery patients. In January 2005, the company raised a $6 million series A round from The Aurora Funds, Inc. and H.I.G. Ventures.

Nextreme Thermal Solutions, Inc.

Nextreme Thermal Solutions, Inc.

RTP-based Nextreme Thermal Solutions, which spun out of RTI International in January 2005, is a pioneer in the development of next generation thermoelectric materials and devices. Nextreme's thin-film superlattice technology represents the first significant breakthrough in thermoelectric materials in 40 years. When placed directly under a semiconductor hot spot, Nextreme's superlattice material can efficiently pump heat from the semiconductor package. The technology has the potential to dramatically improve thermal management for the next generation of microprocessors and other integrated circuits. In February 2005, Nextreme raised $8 million in Series A funding from SpaceVest, The Aurora Funds, Inc., Harris & Harris Group, Inc. and RTI International.
