2004 Charles Hamner Leadership Award(previously awarded at Biotech 2004 on May 27, 2004)
Stuart Bondurant, M.D DescriptionDr. Stuart Bondurant is currently Professor of Medicine and Dean Emeritus at the School of Medicine of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Bondurant became Professor of Medicine and Dean of the School of Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1979, a position he held until he retired as Dean in 1994. Reasons for winning the awardThis is the third annual award for exemplary vision and leadership in biotechnology. During his career Dr. Bondurant has served as an officer of many organizations and societies that have greatly benefited the life science community. In addition to his years of leadership at UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Medicine, Dr. Bondurant has also served in key roles in various organizations, including the following: President of the American College of Physicians, the Association of American Physicians, and the American Clinical and Climatological Association; Acting President of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences; Vice President of the American Heart Association and of the American Society for Clinical Investigation; Chairman of the Board of the North Carolina Biotechnology Center; Chair of the Council of Deans of the Association of American Medical Colleges; and Chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges. From 1989 to 1995 he served as Chair of the North Carolina Governors Commission on the Reduction of Infant Mortality. Dr. Bondurant has served on a number of corporate and eleemosynary Boards. He also has served as advisor to the National Institutes of Health, the Veterans Administration, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Health and Human Services. I salute all of those whose contributions will further realization of the huge potential of biotechnology." -- Stuart Bondurant, M.D. HistoryDr. Bondurant received the B.S. in Medicine Degree and the M.D. Degree from Duke University. He interned and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center and the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. He served in the United States Air Force as a research internist and chief medical officer in the Acceleration Section of the Aeromedical Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He was a member of the faculty of the School of Medicine at Indiana University Medical Center and was Chief of the Medical Branch of the Artificial Heart-Myocardial Infarction Program at the National Heart Institute. He was Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine prior to serving as President and Dean of Albany Medical College in Albany, New York. After retiring from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1994, he served as Director of the Center for Urban Epidemiologic Studies of the New York Academy of Medicine.
