Peak 10 Acquires bayMountain
to Expand into the Richmond Market
Raleigh-based Peak 10 Inc. (www.peak10.com)
acquired bayMountain, of Richmond, Va.,
to enhance its technical capabilities
and service offerings as a data center
operator and managed services provider.
Peak 10 is the largest independent company
of its type in the eastern United States.
The acquisition will help the company
expand to the Northern Virginia, Charlottesville
and Tidewater regional markets. Executives
of Peak 10 believe the purchase of bayMountain
will further development in security,
disaster recovery and business continuity
areas.
Hatteras Announces Initial Closing of Fund Focused on Early-Stage Companies
Durham-based Hatteras
Venture Partners (www.hatterasvp.com)
announced today the first closing
of its third venture capital fund,
Hatteras Venture Partners III, LP
(HVP III). The Fund has secured
commitments for $60 million to invest
in seed and early-stage companies
in biopharmaceuticals, medical devices,
diagnostics and related opportunities
in human medicine. The ultimate
fund size is expected to be $100
million.
Aurora Funds
Invests in Point of Sale Information
Provider Recordant
The Durham-based Aurora Funds (www.aurorafunds.com)
was among the new investors, who provided
Recordant, a startup that delivers point
of sale information, with $9 million
in new financing. Since its launch
in 2005, Recordant has raised $13 million
to provide qualitative information to
clients to improve employee-customer
interaction at the point of sale. The
Aurora Funds, focused on information
technology companies, was joined by
Pequot Ventures, of New York, in the
round of funding.
Inspire Licenses AzaSite
for Ocular Infections
Durham-based Inspire Pharmaceuticals,
Inc. (www.inspirepharma.com)
has signed an exclusive licensing agreement
with InSite Vision Incorporated for
the U.S. and Canadian commercialization
of AzaSite (1.0% azithromycin ophthalmic
solution), a topical anti-infective
product currently under review by the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis.
Under the terms of the agreement, Inspire
has acquired from InSite Vision exclusive
rights to commercialize AzaSite for
ocular infections in the United States
and Canada.
LabCorp and ARCA Discovery
Join to Test the First Cardiovascular
Genetic Drug
Burlington-based LabCorp (www.labcorp.com)
and Denver-based ARCA Discovery have
teamed up to develop a commercial genetic
test for bucindolol, a genetically targeted
heart failure development by ARCA. LabCorp
is excited about the partnership with
ARCA because physicians will benefit
from its scientific expertise with the
genetic tests, which will serve individual
patient needs. The financial details
of the partnership have yet to be determined.
Argos Therapeutics Announces
Personalized Immunotherapy Clinical
Trial for HIV Patients
Durham-based Argos
Therapeutics (www.argostherapeutics.com)
has initiated a Phase 1/2 clinical trial
to test the immunologic activity and
safety of its AGS-004 in HIV-infected
adults. The target population for the
study is patients with durable viral
suppression from highly active antiretroviral
therapy (HAART). AGS-004 is a personalized
RNA-loaded dendritic cell based immunotherapy
that is designed to stimulate the patient’s
immune system to target and destroy
the patient’s own unique viral burden.
Quintiles Opens New Data
Processing Center in Eastern North
Carolina
RTP-based Quintiles Transnational Corp.
(www.quintiles.com)
, has opened a new data processing facility
in Williamston, N.C. Quintiles completed
renovations and equipment installation
at the new 10,000-square-foot data processing
center in mid-January. The company plans
to create at least 60 new jobs at the
facility over the next three years.
The center will be used primarily for
data entry.
