Majority of RFMD's Bluetooth Assets to Be Acquired by QUALCOMM
Greensboro-based RF Micro Devices Inc. (RFMD) (www.rfmd.com), a designer of radio systems and solutions for mobile communications applications, has signed an agreement to sell the majority of its Bluetooth assets to QUALCOMM for $39 million. The pending transaction is expected to provide QUALCOMM access to next-generation Bluetooth technology.

RFMD anticipates the transaction will enable it to increase its focus on its highest growth wireless business opportunities, including cellular transceivers, cellular power amplifiers, wireless local area network (WLAN) power amplifiers, global positioning system (GPS) components and Gallium Nitride (GaN) high power amplifiers.

CEA to Acquire Hagemeyer's Wire Harness Assembly Unit
Smithfield-based Carolina Electronic Assemblers (CEA) (www.ceamanufacturing.com), a manufacturer of printed circuit board assemblies, has agreed to acquire the wire harness assembly business of Hagemeyer North America for an undisclosed amount.

CEA said that it will provide employment to the approximately 40 associates currently employed by Hagemeyer at the 120,000-square-foot manufacturing and distribution facility. Terms of the acquisition, which is expected to close in late January 2007, were not disclosed.

RTP’s LVL7 Systems to be Acquired for $62 Million
RTP-based LVL7 Systems (www.lvl7.com), a developer of networking software, was acquired for $62 million in cash by Broadcom. Broadcom is based in California and produces semiconductors for wired and wireless communications.

The combination will bring together LVL7’s software expertise with Broadcom networking products for small and medium-sized businesses.

Broadwick Launches IntelliContact Enterprise
Durham-based Broadwick Corp. (www.broadwick.com), a provider of web-based communication software services, has released IntelliContact Enterprise, a version of its email marketing application targeted toward mid-sized and larger organizations.  IntelliContact Enterprise will offer everything that the company's leading email marketing application IntelliContact offers, but also include a higher level of account management service.

IntelliContact Enterprise is designed for mid-sized and large organizations as well as companies who want creative, strategic, and deliverability assistance.  Pricing for IntelliContact Enterprise starts at $100 per month and is based on the number of subscribers on an organization’s list.

More Growth for Talecris: Company Opens European Headquarters
RTP-based Talecris Biotherapeutics (www.talecris.com) is increasing the size of its footprint, opening a European headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany. The group will operate as sales and services organization for clients across 15 countries. Some 50 people will be added, a company spokesperson said. More than 40 already have been hired.

Talecris is taking over European distribution of its products from Bayer. The move to establish a presence overseas is part of Talecris’ expansion plan. Talecris, which is a 20-month old firm based on the acquisition of facilities and a plasma business once operated by Bayer, also operates an office in Canada.

Hosted Solutions Picked by INC Research for Data Hosting Services
Raleigh-based Hosted Solutions, LLC (www.hostedsolutions.com) has been chosen by INC Research to provide managed data hosting services for the company. INC Research provides drug development services to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

INC Research’s data will be housed at Hosted Solution’s data center in Raleigh. Hosted Solutions also has data centers in Cary, Charlotte and Boston, Mass.

Seven NCSU Scientists Elected As Fellows
Raliegh-based North Carolina State University (www.ncsu.edu) has announced that seven of the university’s scientists at are among the new Fellows elected by their peers in the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Among them is Joseph DeSimone, professor of chemistry and chemical engineering. DeSimone is also a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a serial entrepreneur and a member of the Board of Directors for the Council for Entrepreneurial Development.

Other fellows selected include: Robert R.H. Anholt, professor of zoology and genetics; Vincent L. Chiang, professor of plant biochemistry; Marie Davidian, professor of statistics; Gregory Gibson, professor of genetics; Robert Kelly, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering; and Coby Schal, professor of entomology.

SCYNEXIS Announces Research Agreement with Merck for Discovery of Novel Oncology Agents
RTP-based SCYNEXIS, Inc. (www.scynexis.com), a chemistry-focused drug discovery and development company, has entered into a multi-year research agreement with Merck & Co., Inc. to discover and develop novel oncology compounds. Through the use of its proprietary technologies, SCYNEXIS will produce highly-targeted compound libraries and utilize rapid lead optimization techniques to develop new drug candidates for clinical evaluation.

SCYNEXIS focuses on delivering drug pipeline solutions to its pharmaceutical partners. SCYNEXIS' research teams integrate computational chemistry, medicinal chemistry, bioanalysis and process chemistry.
