RTP’s LVL7 Systems to be Acquired for $62 Million
RTP-based LVL7 Systems (www.lvl7.com),
a developer of networking software, was acquired for $62
million in cash by Broadcom. Broadcom is based in California
and produces semiconductors for wired and wireless communications.
The combination will bring together LVL7’s software expertise with Broadcom networking products for small and medium-sized businesses.

Bariatric Partners Raises $12 Million in Second
Round
Charlotte-based Bariatric Partners (www.bariatricpartners.com/),
a developer of surgical facilities obesity, has raised $12
million in its second round of venture capita. The funds
will be used to develop and operate ambulatory surgery centers.
Investors in the company’s latest investment deal include Frazier Healthcare Ventures, New Enterprise Associates and Woodbrook Capital.
IBM to Acquire Vallent
New York-based IBM (www.ibm.com),
one of the largest employers of technology workers in RTP,
has acquired Vallent, a Washington-based supplier of network
performance monitoring software for an undisclosed amount.
Vallent’s software enables the management by service providers of network infrastructure by monitoring and reporting problem areas such as dropped calls and traffic bottlenecks. The company employs about 400 people.

Raleigh-Cary Tops List of 'Best Metros for Women
Entrepreneurs'
California-based AllBusiness.com, Inc. (www.allbusiness.com),
a leading online resource for small and mid-size businesses
(SMBs), has announced that Raleigh-Cary, NC tops the list
for women seeking to start and grow a small to mid-size
business according to the “Best Metros for Women Entrepreneurs”
national study.
Commissioned by AllBusiness.com, the first part of the two-phase study was conducted by Frank N. Magid Associates, which surveyed nearly 700 SMB executives about what attributes were most important to them in terms of business location. There were six attributes where women were much more likely than men to assign high importance: low crime rate, low property tax rates, high household income, modest real estate prices, rapid population growth and pedestrian-friendly.
Accipiter, Mobile Ad Server Provider Sign Technology
Exchange Agreement
Raleigh-based Accipiter (www.accipiter.com),
a provider of online advertising server technology, has
signed a technology licensing deal with Mobile Phone Applications,
a mobile ad server technology provider and publisher.
The company, which is also known as MoPhap, will integrate Accipiter’s online ad management solution into its SparkMobileT Network. The service is designed to deliver ads to mobile data users. SparkMobile technology also will be incorporated into Accipiter’s AdManager platform.
Affinergy & Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation
Form Strategic Alliance
Durham-based Affinergy (www.affinergy.com),
a developer of site-specific biological systems, has formed
a multi-year strategic alliance with the Musculoskeletal
Transplant Foundation (MTF), a not-for-profit consortium
of academic medical institutions. MTF will utilize Affinergy's
peptide linkers to enhance a variety of products. Affinergy
will be working exclusively with MTF in the field of human
allograft on a worldwide basis.
The Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation is the world's largest tissue organization dedicated to providing quality tissue through a commitment to excellence in education, research, recovery and care for recipients, donors and their families.

Quintiles to Invest $10 Million, Create 1,000
Jobs in RTP
Durham-based Quintiles Transnational (www.quintiles.com/),
a clinical research organization, has committed to investing
$10.1 million and creating 1,000 jobs in RTP. The investment
was encouraged in part by $2 million of incentives from
the state’s One North Carolina Fund and a Job Development
Investment Grant.
Quintiles, a privately held company, helps drug makers develop and commercialize new medicines. Its core business is conducting clinical trials under contract to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. The additional 1,000 jobs that will be created will range from management positions to clinical operations employees to administrative staff.
