Constella Group to Acquire Lineberry Research Associates
Durham-based Constella Group (www.constellagroup.com), a global provider of professional health services, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire RTP-based Lineberry Research Associates (LRA), a full-service, U.S. contract research organization and consulting firm. Founded in 1995, LRA is a leading provider of regulatory affairs, medical writing, product development strategy, clinical trial management and data management services for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. LRA employs more than 75 people, all of whom will join Constella’s pharmaceutical product development business unit once the acquisition is complete, which is expected to occur within the next 30 days.

This acquisition will provide Constella with greater expansion of its U.S. regulatory, product development, quality assurance, data management, medical writing and clinical trials capabilities. The combined organization will give Constella greater capacity and additional resources to expand its global platform to deliver full service drug development programs. LRA will begin operating under the Constella Group name in the next few months. Charles Lineberry, chief executive officer, and Cat Lineberry, president, will remain actively involved in the business as chief scientific officer, and vice president of strategic affairs, respectively.

FormScape Purchased by Bottomline Technologies for $22 Million
Morrisville-based FormScape Group Ltd. (www.formscape.com), a document process automation solutions provider, was purchased by New Hampshire-based Bottomline Technologies for $17 million in cash and $5 million in common stock.  FormScape provides document process and financial transaction process automation software to more than 1500 customers that include CitiGroup, Wal-Mart, Wells Fargo, Phillips and Fujitsu.

The acquisition is predicted to boost earnings by $8.5 million to $9 million in sales for the year by June 2007.  Joe Mullen, chief executive officer of Bottomline Technologies, said that this was an exciting transaction that will provide Bottomline with strategic and financial benefits.

Business Leader Acquires Two National Magazines; Announces National Circulation Agreement
Raleigh-based Business Leader (www.businessleader.com), the publisher of the Triangle area's only full-color monthly business magazine, has acquired Opportunity World and Money 'n Profits magazines for an undisclosed amount. As part of the transaction Business Leader, which publishes Business Leader magazine, The Park Guide, The Corporate Relo Guide, and Commercial Real Estate Today, will launch a national bi-monthly version of Business Leader in the first quarter of 2007.

All of the operations of Opportunity World, Money 'n Profits and Total Business Media will be moved to Business Leader's Raleigh, North Carolina offices.

Visitar and Sylantro Announce Joint Integrated CRM Solution
Raleigh-based Visitar (www.visitar.com), an interaction solutions company, announced a joint integrated CRM solution with Sylantro Systems based on the 360° Care viaVisitar solution. The partnership will provide Sylantro’s national network of service providers, resellers, and system integrators with an enhanced version of Visitar’s 360° Care viaVisitar, an affordable interaction solution for SMBs.

Visitar will demonstrate this functionality at the Sylantro Global Summit 2006, taking place October 15-18 at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, in a special breakout session titled “Web 2.0 Meets the Phone.”

Misys Project Begins Accepting Applications for $10 Million in Community Grants
The Raleigh-based Misys Center for Community Health Leadership (www.misys.com) is accepting applications for some $10 million in community grants through Dec. 31. The grants are meant to help spread the adoption of electronic healthcare records. The program was established in June of this year by Misys Healthcare Systems.

Communities and regional healthcare organizations interested in the sharing of clinical data for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes are eligible to apply. Groups do not have to be affiliated with Misys in order to be eligible.

UNC Named Genome Analysis Center for Federal Cancer Genome Atlas Project
The Chapel Hill-based University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (www.med.unc.edu) was invited to take part in the Cancer Genome Atlas project. The project is a collaborative, three year, $100 million pilot project to test using large-scale genome analysis technologies to identify important genetic changes involved in cancer.

The Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, based in UNC’s School of Medicine, has been named one of seven Cancer Genome Characterization Centers for the genome atlas project.  The cancer atlas will map the genomic changes associated with lung, brain and ovarian cancers.  The seven genome characterization centers will operate as a network, with each center using advanced genome analysis technologies to identify major changes in the genomes of these cancers.

Maverick Endeavors Launches to Offer Strategy, Marketing and Sales Services
Cary-based Maverick Endeavors (www.maverickendeavors.com) has launched as a fully integrated strategy, marketing and sales consulting firm. The new company will bring the services of Maverick Marketing, Maverick Sales and Maverick Strategy under a single brand. Maverick Endeavors will work with early-stage companies, from pre-funding stages through successful exits. The firm will also work with mid-size businesses seeking growth opportunities.

In addition, John Niedermayer has joined Maverick Endeavors as Vice President, Strategic Services of Maverick Endeavors. Niedermayer, formerly of AVOS Life Sciences, brings more than 15 years of international consulting and management experience to the company. His background includes strategic and operational engagements with companies in healthcare, finance and consumer goods.
