AuctionRover.com of Morrisville has signed a licensing agreement with eBay, Inc., the Internet's leading personal online trading community. The agreement allows bidders using AuctionRover.com to easily search through and connect with auctions on eBay as well as 30 other auction sites now searched by AuctionRover.com. The agreement with eBay helps round out AuctionRover.com's services for both bidders and sellers of auction items, providing them with a centralized location to complete their online auction activities.

Kenan-Flagler Announces New E-Commerce Academic Area


The Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill announces plans to establish an area for e-commerce and information technology within the School. The new academic area, which will be called Information Technology and E-Commerce (ITEC), will serve as a maypole for a school-wide, faculty interest group related to electronic commerce. The area will also be the primary home of IT-related faculty and will hopefully increase the visibility of school-wide efforts in the e-business arena.

WUNC Entrepreneurs Challenge A Success


During WUNC’s "Morning Edition" on November 5, CED challenged entrepreneurs make pledges to WUNC-FM which in turn leveraged a $2,800 pool of donations from a Challenge pool. AwayMed.com Expects to Close on $1 Million Plus in Funding


AwayMed.com expects to close soon on a $1 million plus round of angel financing that includes investments from unnamed professional athletes. AwayMed, founded by former college athletes, offers patients doctor-approved orthopedic information via terminals placed in clinic and physician waiting rooms. They are in place at nine sites such as Triangle and Duke Orthopedics clinics now and the company expects to have them at 50 locations by Jan.1. AwayMed intends to boost its number of units in orthopedic clinic waiting rooms with the cash. AwayMed is a FastTrac Tech and STREAK graduate.

ICAgen Inc. Raises Second Major Round of Financing


ICAgen Inc. has raised a second major round of financing totaling more than $19 million from seven investment groups to expand its search for drugs based on modifying ion channels, the body's electric communication system. San Francisco-based Alta Partners and New York's Chase Capital Partners led the venture investors. Other new investors included Swiss-based New Medical Technologies and the Japanese firm Fugijin. ICAgen's existing investors, Venrock Associates, NY, Gutrafin, England, and Hoegh Invest AS, Norway, also made significant investments in the round. The money will be used to expand its drug discovery program and to fund preclinical and clinical development programs.

MindLever.com, formerly Empower, Raises $4 Million


MindLever.com has raised $4 million in first round financing from three venture funds, and has named Salim Bhatia chairman, chief executive officer and president. The online learning company, formerly called Empower Corp., received $4,075,000 in first round financing from Alliance Technology Ventures, Atlanta, Mid-Atlantic Venture Funds, Philadelphia, and the North Carolina Enterprise Fund. The company plans to expand its senior management team and build a sales and marketing staff. The company employs 16 people now and expects to hire multiples of that over the next six months. MindLever is a STREAK graduate and a Venture '99 presenter.

TaskPoint.com Announces $1 Million in Funding at STREAK Luncheon


When Bill Dears, founder, CEO and president of TaskPoint.com, made his presentation at the November 30 STREAK luncheon, he was not just practicing to get funding. He was announcing he had just received funding of $1 million from Gray Ventures. TaskPoint.com, formerly called Centrigen, offers a unique business-to-business e-commerce solution for the construction equipment industry. TaskPoint's solution provides significant value to users, suppliers and manufacturers of construction equipment and related items. TaskPoint hopes to close a second round of financing in the second quarter next year.
