Biotech Market Up in N.C.
The Wall Street Journal reports that other Southeastern states are beefing up their investments in biotech infrastructure in an effort to catch up to N.C., which is ahead of the curve with the RTP-based N.C. Biotechnology Center. PricewaterhouseCoopers reports the Southeast's market share in biotech and pharmaceuticals has grown dramatically since 1996 - biotech at 12.9 percent from 6.8 percent and pharmaceuticals at 11.8 percent from 2.5 percent.
LipoMed Wins $730,000 Contract from CDC
LipoMed has won a $730,000 contract from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to research the link between lipoprotein levels in the blood and the onset of diabetes and some types of coronary artery disease. Raleigh-based LipoMed will use its Nuclear Magnetic Resonance technology for the two-year research project on lipoproteins, blood particles that transport cholesterol and triglycerides.
Sign Me Up…NetGift Registry Signs 30 Affiliates
Only four weeks after its launch, NetGift Registry has signed 30 new affiliate sites to its network of those offering NetGift's service. Durham-based NetGift Registry offers registering for gifts and shopping among its 370 merchants and 3.5 million products. The 30 affiliate sites include primarily geographic sites. The company's affiliates also include www.charlotteobserver.com and www.usatoday.com.
AuctionRover.com Joins CED Entrepreneurial Stock Campaign
Scot Wingo, AuctionRover.com founder, has joined CED's Entrepreneurial Stock Endowment Campaign and has pledged stock to CED. The campaign is a unique philanthropic program that allows entrepreneurs and early stage companies to donate illiquid stock to CED's endowment fund. Other recent donors to the campaign include Neal Davis, Warren Grimes and Brian Gold of Reedy Creek Technologies, Inc., and Bernard Gray of Gray Ventures. Red Hat Shares…Up, Up, and Away!
Shares of the Durham-based company rose $44.563, or 26 percent, to $213.50 during the Thanksgiving week. By the end of the week, the 5-year-old company had reached a market value of $14.7 billion, nearly three times the value of Carolina Power & Light, once the Triangle's most valuable publicly traded company.
Total Sports Scores Cash from NBC
Total Sports Inc. of Raleigh is seeking $57.5 million in new cash, with plans on going public soon. Total Sports got $35.5 million in new private cash and signed a deal with NBC Sports that will give Total Sports $17.4 million worth of on-air promotion in exchange for a 10.55 percent stake. Total Sports, which focuses on live event-centered sports coverage, will enhance the developing Internet presence of NBC Sports.
