UNC Wilmington’s Marine Science Director Will Give Luncheon Keynote on Nov. 11; Four NC-based Companies to Present at Angel Retreat on Nov. 10

November 1, 2005, Research Triangle Park, NC – The Council for Entrepreneurial Development (CED) today confirmed featured speakers and presenting companies for its upcoming Opportunity 2005 Conference: Fueling Entrepreneurial Success, set for November 10 and 11 at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside in Wilmington, NC. Spearheaded by the newly formed CED-Coastal office in Wilmington, Opportunity 2005 will offer how-to sessions and one-on-one consulting for entrepreneurs, as well as professional development and expanded deal flow for both novice and long-time angel investors.

Dr. Daniel G. Baden, Director of the Center for Marine Science at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, will discuss university technology commercialization during a luncheon keynote on Nov. 11. Baden joins previously announced keynote speaker Farrell Reynolds of Ruckus Network at CED’s conference. Baden is an active researcher in Oceans and Human Health, and a Professor of Chemistry and of Biological Sciences. He was recently honored to receive the William R. Kenan Distinguished Professor of Marine Sciences. Baden has served on panels and review groups for NIH in: nursing; comparative medicine; oceans and human health; and on the Environmental Health Science Council of NIH. He currently serves on the CORE Board of Governors, while continuing to pursue his work with harmful algal blooms and marine toxins. His most recent work surrounds marine toxins and the use of their derivatives as potential therapeutic agents.

“Dr. Baden is well-known for his entrepreneurial approach to moving university technology to the private sector,” said CED President Monica Doss. “As someone who is highly respected in academic and entrepreneurial communities, Dr. Baden will add a valuable perspective to Opportunity 2005.”

In addition to Baden, CED has also confirmed speakers for a featured panel on the first day of the conference on Nov. 10. During the 4 p.m. plenary discussion “Super Entrepreneur To Super Investor,” Stephen Clark, former CEO and Chairman of SpectraSite Communications, and Kip Frey, Partner with Intersouth Partners, will discuss the successful transition from entrepreneur to investor.

Prior to this panel session, CED is presenting an Angel Investor Retreat from 1-4 p.m. on Nov. 10. In addition to panel discussions on term sheet trends and cooperative investing between angels and VC’s, the Angel Retreat will also feature company presentations from Bioptigen (Durham, www.bioptigen.com), Entex Technologies Inc.
