CED Receives Coleman Foundation Grant
Grant will fund Entrepreneurial Scholars ProgramResearch Triangle Park - The Council for Entrepreneurial Development (CED) was the first non-academic organization to receive an "Entrepreneurship Awareness and Education Grant" from the Coleman Foundation.
CED will use the $25,000 one-year, one-time grant to fund its Entrepreneurial Scholars program, which places students from area universities as interns at local entrepreneurial companies. The money will be used for curriculum development and enhanced marketing for the program.
The "Entrepreneurship Awareness and Education Grant" is normally given to universities and colleges. This year, the Coleman Foundation, which is based in Chicago, received 107 proposals and gave grants to 33 organizations.
About the Entrepreneurial Scholars Program
The interest in entrepreneurship as a career choice has increased greatly among
Triangle university and college students, calling for more opportunities for
students to gain hands-on experience in an entrepreneurial environment through
internships with Triangle companies. While entrepreneurial companies are aware
of the benefits that qualified interns can offer, they do not have the resources
to work with the process of identifying suitable interns and complying with
intern placement procedures at five different colleges and universities. CED
is uniquely positioned to serve both company and student needs in an efficient
and effective manner.
Working with a steering committee that included students, faculty, administrators and entrepreneurs, CED developed the CED Entrepreneurial Scholars Program, an inter-institutional internship program and symposium created to further entrepreneurial training of students from Duke University, Meredith College, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The program is based on a model created by the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and is partially funded by the Kauffman Center.
