3dMD LLC (Atlanta, Ga., www.3dmd.com) 3dMD provides high-precision, ultra fast (1.5 milliseconds) 3D surface imaging devices and sophisticated real-time 3D volumetric imaging software for patient measurement, evaluation, planning, monitoring progress and outcome simulation. 3dMD's 3D software platform supports a new generation of treatment tools that simulate hard and soft tissue outcomes using the patient's fused image, (CT/CBCT/3dMD/etc) as the foundation. AP Solutions, Inc. (Cary, N.C., www.aplasmasolution.com) AP Solutions is currently manufacturing and selling prototypes of the world’s first environmentally responsible, hand-held, atmospheric plasma delivery system based upon a patent-pending PlasmaFlux technology.  The PlasmaFlux technology quickly and safely removes paint and polymeric coatings from delicate, temperature sensitive surfaces such as composite aircraft structures without damage to the underlying substrate.  The PlasmaFlux technology only uses electricity and plasma-excited air to remove these coatings; no VOCs, no solvents or grit blasting materials are required. PlasmaFlux technology has been used in the process to convert waste biomass (like hog waste or switchgrass) into alternative fuels like methanol and ethanol. The technology can also be used to create nanoparticles for the solar energy, cosmetic, and biomedical industries, scrub toxic pollutants from air and water effluents, and replace a variety of other industrial processes typically requiring expensive vacuum chambers.

Blue Square Energy (North East, Md., www.BlueSquareEnergy.com) Blue Square Energy has developed a proprietary high-performance thin-film crystalline silicon solar cell technology called Bright Point. Bright Point solar cells combine a low-cost, boron-rich silicon substrate with a high-performance thin-film silicon active layer to deliver a product that matches the high performance and reliability of traditional crystalline silicon solar cells at a fraction of the cost. To achieve high efficiencies, a high-purity thin layer of silicon (less than 20 microns) is deposited on the substrate through a proprietary manufacturing process. IntraTemp™ stands control critical sterile fluids and require a single-use procedure kit for each surgery. C Change successfully executed a limited market release in late 2006; IntraTemp™ products are being used in hospitals now. Strong clinical trends and a recent change in US and European standards have created a significant opportunity for these products. North Carolina State University – Nanotechnology (Raleigh, N.C., http://chsfpc5.chem.ncsu.edu/~franzen/sf.html) The North Carolina State University Department of Chemistry has developed is an application of a naturally occurring protein construction that has a diameter of in the size range of 35-40 nanometers. This construction has a dynamic transition that allows loading of drugs and targeted release in cells. Important features include cell-specific targeting, controlled release and nuclear targeting within the cell.

NovaVision, Inc. (Boca Raton, Fla., www.novavision.com) NovaVision has developed Vision Restoration Therapy (VRT), a daily at-home rehabilitation therapy that can reduce neurological vision loss that affects approximately 2.2 million Americans. While other rehab modalities have long been a standard of care for stroke and TBI patients, VRT addresses vision, an important missing rehabilitation. The therapy is performed on an FDA-cleared medical device, with regular updates tailored to the patient's deficit. TIRF Technologies Inc. (Morrisville, N.C., www.tirftechnologies.com) TIRF Technologies has developed advanced biodetection platform technology for biodefense, biomedical, food analysis, forensic and other applications. In contrast to traditional methods, TIRF biosensors are rapid, accurate, supersensitive, and have negligibly small probabilities of false positive and false negative responses. In 2006, London Business School selected TIRF Technologies as one of the finalists of Global Security Challenge – the world-wide contest of emerging anti-terrorism technologies. The Federal government awarded to TIRF Technologies $5.4 million in R&D grants. The company has developed analytical grade TIRF instruments and biosensors and sold over a hundred TIRF devices to academic and pharmaceutical research groups. Currently TIRF Technologies is downsizing TIRF biosensors to a handheld device for point-of-care use. UNC, Departments of Radiology and Computer Science, VDP Group (Chapel Hill, N.C.) UNC professors John Clarke in Radiology and Russell Taylor and former graduate student David Borland (now at RENCI, UNC) in Computer Science invented a non-invasive diagnostic technique that enables a radiologist to view 3-dimensional reconstructions of medical data sets (CT and MR). This patent pending imaging technology allows for novel views of areas of interest that cannot be obtained from traditional invasive arthroscopic techniques. The software has been integrated with major medical imaging platform and devices to conduct further testing and validation in clinical settings.
